STAPEDECTOMY

Pre operative instructions:

 Plan for your care and recovery after the operation. Allow for time to rest and try to find people to help you with your day-to-day duties.

Do not take aspirin for a week before the operation, unless advised otherwise by your doctor.

Follow any instructions your doctor may give you. Eat a light meal, such as soup or salad, the night before the procedure. Do not eat or drink anything after midnight and the morning before the procedure. Do not even drink coffee, tea, or water.

 

Postoperative Events:

After 7 days, Gelfoam packing is removed and after two weeks, a good evaluation can then be obtained as to whether the hearing has improved. Water is kept away from the ear and blowing of the nose is discouraged. If there are allegies or a cold, further antibiotics and decongestant should be given.You are instructed to abandon or get away from all actions that causes straining like lifting heavy weight, strenuous exercise, blowing the nose and constipation. You may manage some constipation by a mild laxative and cough by a cough suppressant..

 

When should I call the doctor?

Call the doctor immediately if:

  • You develop a fever.

  • You cannot stand up because of dizziness.

  • You have drainage from your ear.

  • You have uncontrollable pain.

Call the doctor during office hours if:

  • You have questions about the procedure or its result.

  • You want to make another appointment.
